Infant Swim Survival Lesson Information
Welcome and thank you for choosing to consider Infant Swim Survival lessons.
First of all, NEVER consider a child “Water Safe” or “Drown Proofed”.
All children should be carefully supervised when in or around water, no matter how much training they have received,no child is ever down proof.

If your child is currently in any form of swim lesson this must stop during Infant Swim Survival lessons.
What to expect
Survival skills - the key element of safety and survival for your child is the rollback to float.
In this position your child can rest and breathe. If your child was to fall face down into water, knowing how to roll into a face up back float position could help to save his/her life.
If your child is walking then he or she can also learn to swim to the step or the pool edge, rolling over to breathe as necessary.
Roll over breathing is a technique that many swim schools don’t attempt to teach, mainly because it takes time, skill and patience.
Before and after lessons your child is your responsibility. It is critical to bring a positive attitude to each lesson.
I will teach your child the skills, but it is your support that will most affect his/her attitude and progress.
I have observed that some children do better when the parent isn’t in view and some do better when the parent is there to show encouragement and cheer them on. I will assess this and if they are doing well with you in view then you are very welcome to sit poolside. I cannot over emphasize the importance of your support.
If your child is nonverbal (less than 20 spoken words) you can expect to see some crying as he or she learns these new skills.
Non verbal children deal with noxious stimuli by crying. Your positive support is critical before, during and after swim lessons.
Please do not start your child on this program unless you fully intend to complete the entire learning process.
The initial training period is a very critical time of adaptation to a new environment, instructor and technique for you and your child.
During the first stages, it can be a time of very low self confidence in the water because your child has not had time to acquire his/her skills in the aquatic environment.
If your child’s lessons are terminated during this time, the foremost thing the child will remember about the water is that lack of self confidence in and around water.
Therefore: make sure that this program is for you before you register; then stay with it and support your child as they learn some amazing skills.
The training programme
What your child will learn:
To hold his/her breath underwater
Turn over from face down position, to face up, float, rest and breathe
Older children will learn:
All the above and to flip back over to resume swimming. (some children may only learn this part during maintenance lessons)
The programme is 5 days a week, everyday Monday to Friday, 10 minute lessons per day,
for approximately 4 weeks or until all skills are achieved.
It is important that your child is able to perform their skills in clothing as well as a swim suit.
They will be checked in both summer and winter clothes but this is only done towards the end of the programme.
Maintenance and refresher lessons
Once your child has completed the basic training it is very important that they maintain their skills.
As their bodies grow their center of gravity shifts.
This shift makes it hard for them to sometime find their float, checks are needed regular for this reason
Maintenance lessons are suggested and can be as little as once a week, regular lessons not only maintain skills but also improve them and build more confidence in the water.
If you are unable to make regular maintenance lessons i will advise refresher lessons.
Refreshers are conducted in weekly sessions 5 days a week like the initial program.
Refreshers are similar to a baby’s check up; they allow the instructor to adjust the float position
and keep your child’s skills sharp.
Your child will retain most of what he/she learns after being out the water for a while, however, will likely lose his/her self confidence if out of the water for a long length of time.
After being out of lessons for a substantial length of time you may find that your child may cry, cling or refuse to use his/her skills. Don’t panic, your child has not forgotten at all, after a few refresher lessons, all will be well.
Registration, cost and attendance
There is a one time non refundable registration fee of £20 per child
(which will need to be paid with your completed registration form).
This will secure your child’s place on the waiting list.
The cost of the program is £150 (plus Registration fee £20).
Payments can be made in installments but full payment must be paid prior to start.

Refresher lessons - weekly blocks
Consistency is a vital part of this program. Please call or text me in advance if your child is unable to attend a scheduled lesson and if I can I will offer another slot for that day. If you know your child will miss a week or more due to illness/family emergency please notify me ASAP and I will do my best to reschedule.
How to prepare for lessons
Food and drink – please do not feed your child for at least 90 minutes prior to lessons.
Please avoid dairy foods and foods with skin such as grapes, strawberries, apples etc. The reason for this is that these foods are harder to digest and during the initial lessons your child will swallow air, when air is swallowed this will cause the child to burp and if there is food in their belly it will come up with the burp.
If this happens to your child do not be frightened or distressed. It happens to most children in the initial stages and can be controlled by feeding times. We may find that they need to avoid food for 2 hours before lessons.
It is also likely in the initial lessons that your child may swallow small amounts of water and again the water can come back up with a burp, this is normal,
as your child learns how to control their breath it will become less and less.
Time schedule – Please be at the pool and have your child ready 5 minutes before the start of his/her lesson, if you are late it is possible you will miss your slot and I may not be able to fit you in at a later time.
What to wear
A normal comfortable swim suit is fine for lessons.
Children who are not potty trained must wear a reusable swim nappy over the top of their disposable swim nappy. Disposable ones alone do not meet the requirements for proper containment should an accident occur.
The reusable swim nappies have elastic waist/leg bands and are a lot better at keeping it in for extra safety
and it is also a lot easier to clean up.
Be sure to have 2 towels at every lesson. Your child will be required to lie down on one at the side of the pool and the other will cover him/her over. This allows rest after the lesson
and if there is any air in the child’s belly this also allows time to release it before moving around.
As the first several weeks of lessons are critical in establishing the skills set,
I must ask that you keep your child out of the water apart from these lessons during this time period.
I will ask parents into the water when i feel it's necessary, parents will learn how to correctly interact with their child so that the skills are not broken down, but until this time please do not attempt any of these prompts until after your ‘parent lessons’ as incorrect use of prompts can interfere with your child’s progress.
